Southeastern Electric Cooperative, in the Sioux Falls, SD area, is looking for an Accounting Manager. This leadership position leads the Finance and Accounting department and manages the accounting functions in a manner which produces maximum results in financial accounting and related accounting services.
Here’s what you’ll do:
- Direct all general accounting activities and maintains a high level of internal controls through segregation of duties when possible.
- Direct activities of supervised personnel and effectively communicates responsibilities, relationships and authorities. Keeps Chief Financial Officer/Assistant Manager adequately informed of department activities and progress. Coordinate department activities with other departments in an effective and efficient manner.
- Prepare monthly and year end operating reports, balance sheets, and statements of cash flow to report the financial result of operations according to generally accepted accounting principles.
- Participate in the development of the annual operating and capital budgets as well as short and long-range financial forecasts.
- Oversee timely compliance with financial reporting requirements of federal, state and local agencies and provides information and assistance during financial audits. Prepare and coordinate the preparation of work papers for the annual audit.
- Prepare monthly cash flow forecasts, to determine the need to requisition long term and short term loan funds. Maintain good cash management of general funds to ensure prompt payment of legal obligations and provide a reasonable, low risk return on funds available for investment.
- Prepare general journal entries and check software vendor journal entries for accuracy. Check subsidiary records with general ledger monthly reports and balances. Ensure balance sheet accounts are reconciled in a timely manner.
- Analyze department activities and software to determine areas of improvement. Make recommendations for improvements in department.
- Check payroll records and reports for accuracy. Verify integration of payroll with other applications. Supervise preparation of payroll tax reports.
- Check and approve invoices for accuracy and verify accounting on invoices before checks are written. Supervise preparation and issuing of general fund payments.
- Keep all records in accordance with prescribed system of accounts and directs development of training programs to ensure compliance with various rules, regulations, policies and procedures of regulatory agencies.
- Promote safe working practices and report immediately all accidents involving department personnel, equipment, and/or materials and supplies to Chief Financial Officer/Assistant Manager.

Here’s what you’ll need to be successful:
- Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university in Accounting or Business or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to learn quickly and apply seasoned judgement as necessary to complete tasks and projects timely and correctly with minimal supervision.
- Working knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience working with NISC (preferred).
- Excel and advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software.
- Possess a good command of the English language.
