The tour gives member-owners of the cooperative the opportunity to learn how electricity is generated and transmitted to them for their use. It includes tours of coal generating plants, a coal mine (weather permitting) and operation centers of your power suppliers.
There is a minimum financial commitment on the part of the members taking the trip of thirty dollars ($30.00) per person or sixty dollars ($60.00) per couple. This fee is the only expenditure the member will make except for personal expenses. Lodging, meals and transportation will be provided.

What Is The Youth Tour?
The National Rural Electric Youth Tour is an annual week-long event during which about 1,800 high school students from all over the country convene in Washington, D.C. to learn more about Government, Cooperatives, and Rural Electrification. During the tour, delegations of students will follow State planned itineraries, which include a day on Capitol Hill, observing the House and Senate in session, and visits to members of Congress in their offices. Scholarships
Basin Electric Power Cooperative developed the Scholarship Program; Basin is one of Southeastern Electric’s power suppliers. The program is designed to encourage and recognize the academic achievements of the children of rural electric cooperatives.
The program is designed to encourage and recognize the academic achievements of the children of rural electric cooperatives. The scholarship must be used for educational costs, and the student must enter college in the fall of the school year of which the scholarship is given. Checks will be made payable jointly to the student and the college, and must be endorsed by both parties. The scholarship will be paid in August.
Dependent children of member/consumers are eligible. Also eligible are the natural or adopted children of a member/consumer. The applicant must also be a U.S. citizen.
The applicant must be a student who is planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited, two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to other awards, loans, or financial assistance the applicant may have obtained.
Previous SEC scholarship winners are not eligible.
Awards are based on academic excellence which includes the following critera: grade point average, work experience, participation in school and community activities, a statement by the student explaining his/her educational and career goals, and a written recommendation by a third party.
Except for the requirements outlined in this brochure, no obligations will be imposed upon the student as a scholarship award winner. Other than payment of the scholarship, no obligations or liability are assumed by SEC.
