Henry Vasgaard Selected as Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week
Southeastern Electric Cooperative and the Viborg-Hurley School are pleased to announce Henry Vasgaard as the Touchstone Energy® Scholar of the Week winner for the week of September 14-20. The scholar of the week program is a partnership between Dakota News Now Television, Southeastern Electric Cooperative and other local Touchstone Energy Cooperatives that honor accomplished high school students.
As a Scholar of the Week, Henry was featured in a weekly segment on Dakota News Now and received a $250 scholarship from Southeastern Electric Cooperative. Henry is also eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship or one of two $500 scholarships that will be given away this spring at the annual Scholar of the Year banquet.
Henry is an active student, participating in FFA, the National Honor Society (Vice President) and Student Council (President). He volunteers his time by assisting special needs students, helping at the school concession stand and local theater, and being an active member of his local church. “Henry has always been the most respectful, polite and kind person, not only to staff, but also to his peers,” shared Viborg-Hurley’s School Counselor Nan Bell. “I am pleased to nominate him based upon his academic record, volunteerism and growth.”
His proudest achievement is being President of the Student Council and working on re-writing the Student Council Constitution. Much of the information was outdated, including the roles and responsibilities of officers and members. Henry hopes that the update will leave a positive legacy for the school and future students.
“I appreciate receiving this scholarship,” said Henry. “It was an honor to be selected as the first Scholar of the Week for this school year!” Next fall, he plans to pursue a degree in Business Administration from Southeast Technical College.
Touchstone Energy Cooperatives are local, active members of their communities, dedicated to building our communities and improving our way of life. Since the Scholar of the Week program began, more than $80,000 in scholarships has been awarded to more than 530 students. The program is a great partnership between local Touchstone Energy Cooperatives and their members and truly captures the commitment that electric cooperatives have to the communities they serve.
Nominations for the weekly awards are submitted by area school principals and faculty, whose selections were based on excellence in the classroom and service in the community.
